For quite some time now, English language Indian films have been on the scene. They've even been given a genre – Hinglish films. And within that genre, they've dabbled in comedy, social drama, coming of age themes. A more recent and successful example was 'Delhi Belly'.
India has had time to warm up to the idea. Even in content, Hindi films have shown a huge western influence of late.
But things are different on this side of the globe. There aren't many examples of a British produced, Hindi language film. This is where Asad Shan's first feature film, '7 Welcome To London', scores.
It's a novel experience from the Brits which manages to register an impact, somewhat.
The content and timing of the release of this film, coincides with the unfortunate, grim reality of the real life stories of immigrants who find themselves lost in this 'land of opportunity'.
Whilst Asad's film is fictitious, you can't help but draw parallels of the true life stories you hear of immigrants in the UK today. The film keeps things light, initially, by focussing on a tender romance between the charming Jai and attractive Simrun.
However, the story would be incomplete without the wonderful supporting cast, as they give the film an added dimension. The character, Goldie, in particular gives us reason to smile with his carefree, yet blunt character.Played earnestly, Goldie manages to make a special place in the film, leaving a long lasting impression.
The story takes a dramatic and sinister turn when Jai's desperation for cash, throws him into a life or death situation. It's an interesting idea and a welcome change to see a Hindi film made by a British crew.
The intentions come across as genuine and that does give the film a certain watchability factor. Certain portions are handled very well and the soundtrack especially is very melodious and pleasant.
Sabeeka Imam manages to portray a simple yet stunning girl perfectly! She's a name to look out for.
Sandeep Garcha as Geet, has a small, but memorable role.Aliakbar Campwala is a joy to watch! Such an effortless performer.
Asad's performance is a genuinely sincere one and portrays the character Jai well.
That said, '7 Welcome To London' is an enjoyable film, with a likeable lead couple and a soothing soundtrack.
