Known as the ‘Godfather’ of Bhangra music, singer Channi Singh has been honoured with an OBE (Order of the British Empire), by her Majesty the Queen. The Queen's birthday honours list 2012 released on released on Saturday 16th June 2012 say that he has been honoured for his "services to Bhangra music, charity and to the community in Hounslow, West London".

Channi Singh, whose full name is Harcharanjit Singh Rapal, was born in Salar village in Punjab, and studied in Malerkotla and Jalandhar. He moved from Punjab to England in 1975.

Channi Singh, known as the god father of Bhangra music is the founder, lead singer, producer, director of Alaap group – one of the first live Bhangra groups to be set up in the UK.

The legendary singer is among several Indian-origin individuals from different walks of life to be honoured in the list.
