I recently went to the lovely city of Murcia is Spain and stayed at the Intercontinental La Torre Hotel run by Polaris World. The weather was amazing, considering it was pouring down in the UK! I had a fab time and had never realised how lovely Polaris World resorts are until I went on this trip…so thought I’d share it with you all….

Forget anything that is etched into the collective consciousness about Spanish developers.  Forget about low quality construction, high density, unfinished developments and – most of all – the dreaded “land grab.” Instead, understand Polaris World, perhaps the most remarkable development company in the world.

Polaris World is different. It is supported by names that are world famous for quality and integrity – Jack Nicklaus, InterContinental Hotels, ESPA and the companies of internationally famous architectural designers.

Importantly the project is closely intertwined with the region of Murcia in the South East of Spain where all the development has been undertaken.  Transport planning is inherent across the development.  A new international airport is being planned and new highways to all developments are either already built or under construction.

Conscious of the demands of modern developments on an already scarce resource Polaris is working to secure water stocks for the area – as well as researching grasses for the golf courses and sport facilities, a feature of the developments, that require less water than normal.

“Polaris is not just the latest version of an existing concept,” says CEO Jose Luis Hernandez who was born in Murcia. “This is a revolution in the development of leisure and entertainment resorts.”

Polaris has taken great care to ensure that the developments are places where people can live, not just go on short visits.  “Before starting the Polaris World Project we examined every aspect of what makes a world class living environment with little reference to what has gone before in this area or anywhere in the world.  This is really a clean sheet design.”

Each resort has a Jack Nicklaus Design golf course offering remarkable facilities to residents. There are shops and bars and restaurants, medical centres, an international school and much, much more.

Perhaps the clearest indication of the Polaris World DNA is the integrated way that the corporation has been developed.  The company has its own furniture and household goods store complete with an interior design service; they have one of Europe’s largest Garden Centre businesses with over 300 acres of land devoted to trees and shrubs for either residents, locals or, via a web site, customers anywhere in Europe.  In all there are over 50 Polaris World related companies ranging from technology and communications, to restaurants and training, to construction and materials.

La Torre Golf Resort is arguably the most complete resort in Southern Spain.

Set around a wonderful lake, the town centre has a stunning variety of attractions: from an ice cream terrace to a speciality wine retailer, from a 2,000 sq metre supermarket to a juice and smoothie bar; from a beauty salon to a gymnasium.  There is also a laundry, a bank and 24 hour cash points, a travel agent, two convention centres (the second one courtesy of the 5* InterContinental La Torre Golf Resort Murcia), speciality shops of all kinds, and an international Kings College.

For entertainment residents can choose from a spike bar, an Irish Tavern, the residents’ clubhouse and sophisticated restaurants offering everything from up-market Italian to speciality pizzas. Many of the catering outlets offer a free delivery service for those wanting to relax at home. Bamboo is a fabulous cocktail bar overlooking the water to rival the most upmarket sun-kissed Ibiza offering – a wonderful way to relax, have a snack, read a book or just watch the sun go down. There is also a specialist rice restaurant called Limonero.

Dominating the resort is a spectacular 18-hole Nicklaus Design golf course. The course rewards scratch players as well as those with more modest abilities and ambitions. And ends, of course, with a prime site clubhouse – another place to relax with a quiet drink after 18 holes exertion.

The InterContinental hotel has a covered pool and 14 treatment and relaxation rooms in the spa facility.  Having opened in late 2008 it is the finest hotel in the region.

There is a wide mix of properties to buy with two, three or four bedroom villas, semi-detached houses and one or two bedroom apartments. Like all Polaris World developments, La Torre Golf Resort is low density with just two and half thousand properties (including 1,700 apartments) set in a sprawling 350 acres.
