The director of Talaash, Reema Kagti, speaks to Sunny Malik for Ikonz about her forthcoming film starring Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Rani Mukherji. The director, who has previously directed Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd., talks about writing the script; filming at Pinewood Studios in London and much more.

How are you feeling that your second directorial, Talaash, is about to release?
I am too exhausted to feel anything, as I have just completed the film some time ago. However, I am really excited for the release.  The cast, crew and I have worked really hard and have tried to put our best foot forward. We are excited.

Your last directorial released five years ago. Why did it take so long?
I really don’t know what to put it down to. I have been busy and writing. I was trying to get films off the ground but I would just perhaps put it down to bad luck.

Would you say that you would rather take your time and write a good script than just make films that are being made in the industry right and this is why it took you time ?
Yes, I would rather wait to get my script right before I go in for a shoot. On the other hand, the break that I have had since Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd. has been a bit of a forced sabbatical. I can’t honestly say that it did not bother me. I am not a really patient person. I have to admit that I was getting pretty frustrated by the end of it.

You wrote the story of Zindagi Na Milegi Doobara with Zoya Akhtar and also the story ofTalaash. How do you manage to write stories so apart from each other – a suspense thriller and a feel-good film?

Talaash is a suspense drama, not a thriller. But yes, the films are generically very different from each other. Zoya and I, as writers, we don’t really decide what kind of genre we will write a film into. We let the story and the idea lead us to what kind of genre the film should belong to. Actually, we had incidentally writtenTalaash before Zindagi Na Milegi Doobara.  It was not a conscious choice to make a feel good film or a suspense drama.

Talaashrevolves around a murder. It must be quite difficult to come up with new ways of killing people on paper.
Actually, Talaash does not have many murders. It is different because it deals with emotions, which normally commercial films stay away from. We have shown emotions like sadness, loneliness and loss in the film. In that sense, it is the other end of the spectrum from Zindagi Na Milegi Doobara. However, Zoya and I believe that anything written well, even though it deals with darker emotions,  can still be very engaging and entertaining.

What is the film really about?
I can’t really tell you much about the film. I can tell you that it is a suspense drama and is set against the backdrop of a Police investigation in Mumbai. Normally, when you have suspense in a film, it naturally falls into the category of a thriller. My film is different because the film is very emotional and hence, it is a suspense drama.

How was your experience shooting at Pinewood Studios with Kareena Kapoor Khan and Aamir Khan?
It was just fantastic. It is an institute of film making for me and I took pictures of me against every board of Pinewood Studios I could find. On a more serious note, all the people and the facilities at the studio were fantastic.

Was it difficult to shoot at the Underwater stage at Pinewood Studios ?
It was very, very difficult. The reason I could pull of the sequence was because of the cooperation I had from both actors, Aamir and Kareena.  Aamir was amazing because he did not know how to swim, not that you need to know how to swim for the scene, but it boosts your level of confidence. Also for other scenes in the film, he learnt to swim and made himself very comfortable in water for the shoot. Both of them did a great job.

What the should the UK audience expect from the film?

I can promise the audience a very strong story, which is being taken forward by my main cast.
