BIPASHA BASU EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

By Reena Combo

Beautiful Bipasha Basu talks exclusively to Ikonz about her new film ‘Dum Maro Dum, working with Abhishek Bachchan, living in the public eye and her Hollywood debut

IKONZ: Can you begin by telling Ikonz about your role in ‘Dum Maro Dum’

BIPASHA: I play a character called Zoey; a young lady full of energy and ambition who ends up taking the wrong path in life. I loved playing the part and I found a real personal connection with character. I believe this role is one of the most interesting I have played in my career thus far and I hope the audience makes a connection with Zoey in the way that I did when I read the script.

IKONZ: What attracted to doing the film

BIPASHA: It’s difficult to identify one defining aspect which attracted me to the ‘Dum Maaro Dum’; however it was hard not to recognise the uniqueness of the project. I’m sure audiences will appreciate how well scripted and presented Dum Maaro Dum is.

Working with Rohan was also an important factor. Despite the fact his family essentially redefined cinema on an unprecedented scale, Rohan has still managed to forge his own unique, distinct and attractive style which has had a pioneering influence on Hindi cinema.  When he approached my manager to set up a meeting about the project, I jumped at the chance.

IKONZ: Obviously the title of the film is inspired by the hit track ‘Dum Maro Dum’, is there not a slight fear that that people’s expectations will need to be exceeded as people immediately associate the title of the infamous track?

BIPASHA: It’s inspired by the iconic song from the film Hare Rama Hare Krishna. Audience expectation is something that comes with the movie business and it’s understandable that this may be heightened by Hare Rama Hare Krishna’s classic track. However the most important thing for all involved is to do justice to our roles and I believe by doing this the audience will see and appreciate the film for what it is, a stylish, edgy Rohan Sippy thriller.

IKONZ: What was it like working with Abhishek Bachchan again?

BIPASHA: He’s an immensely talented actor and a great professional. He is extremely grounded and upfront as an individual. He also has this fun side to his personality, so you are guaranteed a frolicsome time with him on set.

IKONZ: Describe a typical day in the life of Bipasha Basu?

BIPASHA: Shoot, Gym, Me Time is probably the best description, although my days never tend to be typical.

IKONZ: It can’t be easy living your life constantly in the public eye?

BIPASHA: I am truly blessed and thankful to be where I am, by the grace of God as well as through the support and affection of my family, fans and friends. My profession is such that I’m constantly in the public eye, but I’m lucky to be in that position. It’s natural that, with the territory you have to forego your privacy to some degree; but this is something you become used to. I wouldn’t trade the position I’m in for anything in the world.

IKONZ: There are so many new actors and actresses launching in Bollywood nowadays, is it difficult to stay ahead of the game?

BIPASHA: There are some wonderful and very talented artists, both established as well as emerging, in Hindi cinema and it’s about respecting each other’s special position in the industry. Everyone brings their own gift and uniqueness to the industry. The important thing is to focus on your own work, set yourself personal goals and ensure you deliver something exceptional with every film role you deliver.

IKONZ: What do you have in the pipeline next?

BIPASHA: I am currently filming for my first Hollywood project – a film called ‘Singularity’, in which I am directed by Roland Joffe and co-star alongside Josh Hartnett. I couldn’t have wished for a better project in which to make my mainstream debut.

IKONZ: Do you have a message for the Ikonz readers?

BIPASHA: I’m a strong advocate of positive thinking and there is nothing better than spreading that positivity to others. Believe in yourself always; work hard with honesty, integrity and a good heart, then rest assured that you will achieve great things. I would also like to thank you all for believing in me, supporting me and helping me get to where I am today. To Ikonz readers and all of my fans out there, I LOVE YOU ALL!
